One Month In: Why SpendMend’s Work Matters

By Rob Proctor, Chief Commercial Officer, SpendMend

One month ago, I joined SpendMend because I saw the potential to help healthcare organizations strengthen their financial performance. After spending my first several weeks with our employees and clients, I am even more convinced.

I have worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. During that time, I have seen financial and operational pressures pull resources away from a health system’s central mission. Every unnecessary expense, missed credit, or inefficient process represents money that could otherwise support patient care.

That is what makes SpendMend’s work so important.

We help health systems recover overpayments, improve pharmacy procurement, capture missed rebates, reduce purchased services costs, and find new uses for surplus medical equipment. The work takes different forms, but the purpose is always the same: helping healthcare organizations retain more of their resources and put them to better use.

What I have seen

During my first month, I have met with colleagues across SpendMend, spoken with healthcare leaders, and listened to client and prospect conversations.

What stands out most is the depth of knowledge within this company.

For more than 30 years, SpendMend has worked inside the complicated financial and operational environments of healthcare organizations. Our teams understand where resources are lost; why those problems are difficult to identify; and what it takes to produce measurable and sustainable results.

Just as important, they understand how the different parts of a health system connect. A decision in pharmacy, finance, supply chain, compliance, or asset management rarely affects only one department. Meaningful improvement requires both specialized expertise and a broader view of the organization.

SpendMend brings both.

What clients value

Some of the most encouraging feedback I have heard has focused not only on the financial results SpendMend delivers, but also on the people behind them.

Our clients value specialists who understand their challenges, work alongside their teams and remain accountable for results. That expertise is backed by the technology and data infrastructure we have built to find savings faster and with greater precision, but our clients are clear that it’s the people interpreting those insights and applying them to their organization who make the difference.  Healthcare leaders do not need another vendor making broad promises. They need experienced partners who know where to look, what questions to ask and how to turn complex findings into practical action.

That combination of expertise, technology, and partnership is a meaningful SpendMend differentiator.

Where we go from here

SpendMend serves more than 150 health systems and nearly 4,000 healthcare facilities. We have earned these clients through decades of trusted relationships and proven results.

Yet many clients know us primarily through one service, one technology solution, or one team. They may know our work in profit recovery without knowing the services we provide in pharmacy, purchased services, rebates, or asset recovery.

Our next step is to make the full breadth of SpendMend easier for every client to access. That means operating as one connected team; understanding each organization’s priorities; and bringing the right expertise forward at the right time.

I still have much to learn, but my early conclusion is clear: SpendMend is critical to a healthcare organization’s cost management strategy, and I am excited to help more healthcare organizations benefit from SpendMend and retain more resources for the patients and communities they serve.
